A plant that misses a build because a part was mis-picked absorbs a cost many multiples of what the storage saved, which is why component programs are specified around inventory control, labeling discipline and dock scheduling before anything else.

Inventory accuracy is the product
A component warehouse is an inventory system with a building attached. Barcode or RFID receiving, location-level putaway, cycle counting and documented pick accuracy are baseline requirements, not premium features. Ask for measured accuracy rates and how they are calculated before discussing rate per pallet.

- System integration path, EDI, API or flat file, defined up front.
Mixed profiles in one program
Component programs rarely store one thing. Small boxed parts want shelving or carton flow, bulky panels want floor space or oversized racking, and returnable racks want a yard or a dedicated bay. A building that handles only one profile forces the rest into an expensive workaround.
- Segment storage media by part profile, not by convenience.
- Plan returnable rack flow in both directions from day one.
- Reserve staging area for kitting or sequencing if the plant requires it.
- Match dock scheduling to the plant's receiving windows, not the warehouse's.
Buffering imported parts against production
Ocean transit variability and plant schedules do not align. A port-adjacent buffer absorbs the variability: containers are stripped on arrival, inventory is held in pallet positions, and the plant draws against a firm release schedule instead of chasing vessels.
Damage, security and packaging
Parts are high value per cube and frequently packaged for ocean transit rather than for repeated handling. Expect to inspect, repack or over-pack. Facilities handling this freight should have access-controlled areas, camera coverage and a documented process for discrepancy reporting at de-vanning.
Transloading and sequenced delivery
Transloading near the port converts ocean containers into plant-ready loads, often sequenced so that material arrives in the order the line consumes it. Sequencing is a labor service, not a storage service, scope and price it separately.
